Meet Roger Chang From The Glen Asian Grocery03 Oct 2017
Roger’s parents moved to Australia 22 years ago from Vietnam with the dream of starting their own business and he started helping in their grocery store at a young age. He now loves the challenge of hunting for the best quality produce to bring back to his customers.
When did your parents start their grocery business?
My parents started it eight years ago.
What’s new about the new The Glen Asian Grocery?
There is a new location which will be bigger than before - more than double in size. The range has grown too and I believe it’s one of the best in Melbourne if not the best.
What are some examples of exotic ingredients that people visit you for?
We are strong in Asian veggies, Asian greens, important south east Asian spices – restaurant grade quality stuff. There’s no limit what we can carry. We’ve got high grade Japanese sakes in our new liquor section, and exotic new locally grown Chinese veggies that many people haven’t seen before that you can’t normally grow over here.
Why did you choose to join the family business?
The more I got into the business the more freedom I found – being able to buy new products and see people enjoying them, learning about the new produce – ordering new items that are the newest and freshest and its really exciting – like Christmas every week month, every week. If they’ve seen it elsewhere they’ll go out of their way for new items – customers just need to ask.
Why do you love The Glen?
Ever since we opened five years ago at The Glen we’ve been welcomed with open arms. Embraced by the customers. I get people every week coming up to me genuinely loving what we have on offer. A clientele that’s really into their food and cooking and willing to try new things. Every time I bring in something new it flies off the shelves. Things that are exotic that they haven’t seen before really excites them. They are passionate about food and cooking.
How would you describe your relationship with The Glen community?
A lot of it is that it is great to be part of the inspiration behind their cooking and inspiring their love of cooking.
Can we get your favourite recipe?
Simple home cooked kang kong (aka morning glory) with sambal or oyster sauce – Sambal kang kong.
Be sure to visit Roger and his team at The Glen Asian Grocery when they open the doors to their new store inside our Fresh Food Market Hall on 19 October.
